Beijing to Lhasa

My wife and I have recently returned from travelling which incorporated in late April the Beijing to Lhasa journey organised by World expeditions.

For the Beijing to Xian sector we were guided by Qui Ming who we called Milly.

I would like to record what a pleasure it was to have Milly as our guide.

We have travelled extensively in the past and had many guides. Milly stands out as the one we will remember for the exceptional way she looked after our group.

Milly's knowledge, and her ability to explain things, could not have been better. In fact she had so much she could tell us that there was never a moment when she wasn't being asked a question.

She chose where we dined, and ordered for us, after ascertaining what people liked or disliked and we were never disappointed. The restaurants were usually local, not tourist only places, and we appreciated that.

When we had time to ourselves she enquired if there were things we specially wanted to do and made sure we knew how to get there and back and what to expect. On one occasion when all in the group wanted to visit a Houtong she arranged it and came with us in what should have been her time away from us.

We were a group ranging in age from about 40 to 70. She appreciated that, at times, some were getting physically tired and she would vary what we doing to accommodate that.

Above all I will remember with pleasure her sense of humour, her always cheerful demeanour and the extra things she did for us beyond what is not normally expected.

Milly is an exceptional guide and I would recommend her to anyone going to China.

The vehicles we use on our Australia adventures are often Toyota Land cruisers. We take a maximum of eight passengers plus a driver. The rear seating arrangement is generally centre-facing i.e. seating along each side of the vehicle. All our vehicles are registered as commercial tourist (passenger carrying) vehicles.

    Adventure Touring
    These adventure tours sometimes involve travel at high altitude (rarely exceeding 4000m, except on certain trips in Tibet, Peru and India) and may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity. To enjoy these adventures we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

    Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

  • Introductory

    These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. These trips do not spend time at altitudes above 4000m and are usually a week in duration. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

    Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trek. For trekking, hill walking with a daypack in variable weather conditions is also recommended. For a cycling adventure, road cycling twice a week for three months prior to departure is recommended.

    These trips involve a combination of what is described in our INTRODUCTORY and MODERATE levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with several moderate stages

    These adventures involve trekking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. The majority of our moderately graded treks involve the carrying of a day pack only, though some may involve carrying a full pack. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions.

    Suggested preparation; 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend will accustom you to regular exercise. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will be beneficial if you are taking part in a trekking adventure, kayaking or road cycling is also recommended depending upon the activity you plan to undertake.
